Narrow Escape

UF art students @ the Sun Center, GNV

This mural was a collaboration between 352walls/Gainesville Urban Art Initiative, University of Florida College of the Arts, School of Art + Art History and McGurn Properties. This was the first time UF art students were engaged to create public art outside the UF campus. Julia Morrisroe, Associate Professor of drawing and painting, encouraged her students to consider how a mural would impact an urban space. In preparation for this project, students researched acclaimed muralists like Shephard Farley, SWOON, and Maya Hayuk.

The winner of the juried competition was senior art student Rafael Moura who served as the project manager and his fellow students worked as a team to complete the mural. "The University of Florida is a part of Gainesville and if the community is beautifying, we should be a part of it," said painting student Jasmine Laska.
