For the muralist Pastel, street art is a kind of “urban acupuncture” -- an unconventional means by which an isolated, nameless, or broken neighborhood can be healed and rebuilt. His cerebral approach to urban art focuses on the identity of these places, accentuating the unique character of each rather than setting out to gentrify them. He pays special consideration to these places, and draws his inspiration for a mural from an understanding of its environment. Known for working with imagery like arrowheads and flora, Pastel’s pieces explore a dialogue about the relationship of man with his surroundings.
